The first project financed by the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) started operation on Saturday in Shanghai. The NDB was founded by BRICS, an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, during the bloc’s sixth summit in Fortaleza of Brazil in July 2014 and formally opened in Shanghai in July 2015. As South Africa prepares to receive African leaders for the sixth FOCAC summit, the country's International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane hosted the President of the BRICS New Development Bank, KV Kamath, in Pretoria. The NDB opened its headquarters in Shanghai, China in July, and is the first of the formal BRICS financial institutions.
